Abstract

As graphing calculators begin to move into the area traditionally held by Computer Algebra Systems, teachers of higher mathematics can reap the benefits of interweaving numerical, graphical, and symbolic approaches to topics in their subject areas. In this introduction to the Hewlett Packard HP 49 and its CAS, a multiple representation approach to solving differential equations will be modeled. Participants will examine the progression from a slopefield, which represents a graphical representation, through a numerical approximation, to a symbolic solution. Concurrently, the transition from the global-graphic, to the specific-numeric, and finally to the abstract-symbolic, will be discussed.
